Some of the scanners are available in a VHF frequency that is used by police, military, air traffic, etc. The frequency for these scanners is 30Mhz to 300Mhz. If an individual wants a scanner with more range, they may select a scanner that include VHF and UHF capability which increases the frequency to 300Mhz to 3Ghz. These frequencies are often used by agencies on their two-way radios.
There are scanners available that can follow trunked systems and APCO-Project 25 digital radio frequencies. These systems are used by state, federal, and public agencies. Scanners do not have the capability of receiving encrypted transmissions since the inception of more stringent safety precautions implemented after 9/11.
A mobile radio scanner is very beneficial to an individual who is traveling or living in an area that has severe and rapid climate changes. One can listen to weather reports as they are happening and follow police transmissions to avoid any road hazards.
