The negative points of this type of scanners are that range availability, volume, and reception will be less than desktop scanners. Probability of damage due to collision, or accidental dropping, is also more with them since the unit is used in rough terrains and in bad weather.

A desktop scanner will have a higher range, volume, and reception, than a handheld unit, and will be an ideal police gear so far as it is needed only for stationary use within the police station or home. A base police scanner is designed both for stationary use and mobile use. It comes with power cords and holes for bracket mounting and so lends itself to easy mounting within a vehicle. It can be run on the electrical system of the vehicle with an adapter, and can be run on household current also. Reception of base scanners can be increased by adding external antennae.

As of now, PC based scanners find comparatively limited use as police gear. It is a type of scanner that is used on a personal computer. Though it is mobile and can be used inside a vehicle, it cannot be used without a laptop. Though range availability is not significantly higher in these, the words can be heard at a much higher volume. Portable use is not possible with a PC based scanner also, just as with base scanners and desktop scanners.
